Downtown Radio and Cool FM are the two largest commercial radio stations in Northern Ireland with 583,000 listeners tuning in every week, with 4 out of every 10 adults tuning in each week.
Downtown Radio is Northern Ireland’s first commercial radio station and it is the only commercial station to broadcast to the whole of Northern Ireland. 290,000 listeners tune in each week to our household name presenters and contemporary adult music format. Downtown Radio is the 2nd largest commercial radio station in Northern Ireland and we are very proud of the fact that it has consistently outperformed the UK market leader, BBC Radio 2.
Downtown Radio is primary for the over 35’s and has a reputation for catering for specialist music tastes such as Country and Gospel. Downtown Radio began broadcasting on 16th March, 1976, coincidentally the same day as Prime Minister Harold Wilson resigned.

Cool FM is Northern Ireland’s largest commercial radio station with 361,000 listeners tuning in each week. Within its transmission area, Cool FM has a 36% adult reach and similar to its sister station Downtown Radio, consistently outperforms the national competition, BBC Radio 1.
Launched on 7th February, Cool FM created a brand new sound for a youth orientated market and has continued to be a pioneer to listeners and advertisers. Cool FM has a broad audience appeal however output is targeted at the 18-35 age demographic.
The station is broadcast in FM to 69% of the adult population in all major towns and cities in the east of the province. In addition, the station is broadcast in DAB throughout all of Northern Ireland. Click here to see the broadcast map.
